Donating Goods - Personal

tstories-donationsbin.jpgA person stands in front of a window staring at the reflection, and wonders how it got this bad. In his reflection, he sees clothes that are threadbare, dirty shoes, and haggared skin that water has not touched for months. All that is left is the shell of a person who was once recognizable, and is now a stranger to himself. Feelings of warmth, comfort, and happiness are but distant memories.

He was once somebody's child. And nothing can eliminate the fear of laying his head to concrete every night, wondering who or what is around the corner, and if he will wake up the next morning. It is too much to bear. Without hope, many of our homeless continue down this road to despair...being lost…forever. Yet, if just one person helps this homeless person, then there will be a chance for him to get on the right path.

The Salvation Army exists for these very people. You see them on the street as you go to work, or when you sit down to watch the evening news. These are the people who need our help, and these are the people who need your help. Everyone deserves a second chance to live, and to give. So if you've passed that homeless person on the street, give him that second chance to live, and allow yourself a second chance to give!

Thrift Stores support more than 200 social programs that touch people in communities across Canada. You can help give hope today by looking in your closets, your homes, and your hearts, and donate today what will make a difference in someone else's life tomorrow!

donating tips ...THINK IN 3D!

We’ve all gone to our closets from time to time, trying to figure out how to make the process of donating a meaningful one. Donating is about much more than making space; it’s about knowing that what you have to offer will change someone’s life in that very moment that you make the decision to donate. Here are a few guidelines that we hope will make you a donation expert:

1. Discuss.
When look for goods in your home, discuss with your partner, your children, and even your family pets, what items they think they might want to donate. Make it a family discussion, so that each person in your home can feel that they are making a difference in someone’s life.

2. Decide
Once you’ve gathered all the possibilities together, decide which items you believe can be used by someone else. We often suggest to donors that if the items are something they would give to a friend, a colleague, or another family member, and is in good condition, those are the goods we would be grateful to have. Those are the items which will help to support our mission.
